Join the AME

Member Benefits Overview

The benefits of this full membership include participation in AME scholarship funds and other AME events, such as, the Annual Picnic, AME Lobster Bake, Christmas Party and all other social events arranged by our Social Committee. But most importantly, it entitles you to vote on the Union contract and in the upcoming Unit elections.

The $1.60 biweekly deduction helps the Union on a state level to secure major pension reform, permanent cost of living adjustments (COLA), increase tier equity, (two years of credited service for tier 1 and tier 2 members), and eliminate employee contribution after 10 years of service for tier 3 and tier 4 members. These enhancements are achieved through lobbying efforts supported by your funds. On a local level these funds help in negotiations for wages, benefits, health and safety, working conditions and our very jobs.

As a full dues paying member in good standing with AME, you are a part of a Union with over 8,000 active and retired members from 34 individual AME Units.

Active members receive our Union newsletter, the AME Voice, to keep you up-to-date on Union matters.

The daily operations of the Union are carried out by the AME Executive Board. One of our primary responsibilities is to negotiate and safeguard the terms of the contract.

AME's current contract for the years 2004-2008 maintains premium-free health insurance and offers many enhanced benefits from our Benefit Fund for all new full-time employees.

Each AME Unit is also represented by its own Executive Board and a Unit President. The Unit President is the Chief Shop Steward and the person you should contact for questions within your unit.

All Unit Presidents meet regularly with members of the Executive Board of AME at monthly Board of Directors meetings. New members are invited to attend Quarterly Membership Meetings held at Union Headquarters.

As President, and on behalf of the Executive Board, welcome to the Suffolk County Association of Municipal Employees, Inc.

If you have any further questions, please call me at 589-8400 and indicate that you are a new member. We look forward to seeing you soon!

With united purpose,

Cheryl A. Felice
President
