Retiree Checks - Notice from New York State Comptroller

1/7/2010 4:29:00 PM - Cheryl A Felice

Notice from New York State Comptroller- Retiree Checks

January 5, 2010

The Post Office has notified the New York State and Local Retirement System that there are issues with the delivery of state pension checks to some areas of the state. The Post Office picked up the checks from the Office of the State Comptroller on December 30 and brought them to the Albany regional facility for distribution to post offices across the state. It appears the Post Office cannot account for some of the checks at the Albany regional facility or en route to local post offices.

The problem is primarily affecting some retirees in Western New York, Rochester and Long Island. Postal officials have informed us that retirees in Central New York should be receiving their checks on January 5 or 6. Retirees in the Capital Region should have already received their checks or will receive them on January 5 or 6.

We anticipate that most retirees will receive their pension checks by mail delivered no later than Wednesday, January 6. If a retiree does not receive his or her check, they should call the Retirement System on Thursday, January 7 at 1-866-805-0990 (or 518-474-7736) and a check will be re-issued. Please note that if a check is re-issued, the original check will be stopped and not be able to be cashed.

This problem does not affect retirees who receive their pension payment by direct deposit. These retirees received their payments to their accounts on December 31. The Retirement System encourages all retirees to enroll in direct deposit payment so that problems with the Post Office will not affect the timing of pension payments. To download the form to enroll in direct deposit, visit: http://www.osc.state.ny.us/retire/forms/rs6370l-3-internetversion.pdf.

The Office of the State Comptroller is working with the Post Office to ensure this does not happen again in the future.
